LIVING & HOUSING IN SAMANA

The Volunteer Apartments and Studios

Located in the center of the seaside town Santa Barbara de Samaná
the Foundation's volunteer apartments are the most popular accommodation option for volunteers and interns. The town of Samaná is a scenic, laid back and peaceful town, with friendly and easy-going Dominicans, living their life with tourism, agriculture and fishing activities, all set to the beat and rhythms of Merengue, Bachata and Salsa music. The 3-room apartments are very conveniently located. You need a few minutes to the work and to the Malecon only. The Malecon is the gorgeous seaside walking promenade, where you will find a lot of restaurants, bars and shops. The village and its surrounding are very safe and our Guesthouse has lovely neighbours who constantly look after us. All important locations in Samaná are only minutes away and its safe to walk at night time. A shared room with two beds is the standard option.

Up-grades are avaiable:
- single room at the 3-room apartment (add € 25,- /week)
- complete fully furnished single room studio apartment! (add € 35,- /week)

All our apartments are fully furnished and have WIFI!
Living together with volunteers from all over the world is a unique chance for cultural exchange and can be an exciting and new way of living compared to anything you've ever experienced before. It has certainly been a key experience in the lives of many past volunteers! Volunteers work and live together and learn how to be empathetic and considerate to others needs. They share their free time, house cleaning tasks and cooking (optional). It means they also become close, develop lifelong friendships, and have immense fun along the way! We feel that it is important to highlight that we have created an environment of respect and consideration.

"A big part of my life in Samana was spending time with my host family. From the first day on I felt really welcome and like a real family member. I joined them to family parties, trips or to visit friends and was always welcome to go to church with them. Important to know!

Our Volunteers enjoy an easy going schedule. Working for the community, organizational meetings and houshold chores do not extend the amount of hours per week which each volunteer individually decides to dedicate. A personalized weekly working plan distributes tasks based on necessity and personal preferences. Past volunteers have confirmed the special nature of this living arrangemment, and have enjoyed it tremendously.

..."Going to a new country as a volunteer is an eye-opening experience, both personally and culturally. Furthermore, it allowed me to reinforce my desire to apply my skills and knowledge to help others. The accommodation and guidance from Julia and Manfred made the trip really comfortable. I have learned a lot from Manfred, he has great ambitions for the organisation. Aldeas de Paz is having a real positive impact in the local community and it is rewarding to know that you have contributed somehow. I met so many amazing people and had so many intense experiences along the way, working with the children from Mama Elba school remains the most wonderful experience of all. I have truly enjoyed my time with Aldeas de Paz and would definitely recommend the NGO to anyone. Thanks again for everything and I will be back again some day!"...

..."A big part of my life in Samana was spending time with my host family. From the first day on I felt really welcome and like a real family member. I joined them to family parties, trips or to visit friends and was always welcome to go to church with them. Because of their help I improved my spanish very fast and was able to communicate with them. They were patient teachers and always proud when I learned something new or understood what they said. I also learned more about their culture and typical food what was very interesting for me because I love cooking. On the one hand they showed me how to prepare a typical dominican meal or my favourite foods and on the other I made some cakes and explained them how to do it. During my stay my host brother and sisters had university vacation so that they stayed at home for three weeks and I got to knew them and we did a lot of family activities. I really enjoyed this. Because of my family I really felt home in Samana and I am going to miss them a lot!"...

Testimony : Aurelia Altherr, Switzerland

..."I choose to live in a hostfamily instead of living in the guesthouse to become acquainted to the Dominican culture.....My host mum and dad are docotors, working in the local hospital..... What i also like is, that I am allowed to bring my friends to my home to do homework, cook or just chilling.... They always have time to cook delicious food for you. In the morning my mother prepares breakfast for me..... What I especially like is that i can choose at what time i would like to eat, because there is always food. When i feel hungry at lunchtime I can eat lunch home, but when I am in a hurry, she prepares me dinner..... I've never been such a long time away from my family, but I found a new one here in the Dominican Republic."...
